Further Information About Our School

Belmont Park ‘is a good school where students feel safe and make significant improvements in their attitudes to learning.  Their academic achievement is good as a result' (OFSTED July 2014).

We work with some of the most deprived and challenging children in the local community.   It is our duty to give them the education and skills and the best of British values to become independent adults contributing economically and socially to our community.

We are a special school for 65 students aged between 10 and 18 years old who have social, emotional and /or mental health difficulties which can lead to challenging behaviour.  Students are taught in small groups at up to a maximum of eight with a teacher and a learning mentor. A small number of students will also have a dedicated learning mentor to support them through the school day.

Nearly all of our students have a statement of Special Educational Needs (changing to an Education, Health and Care Plan – (EHCP) which outlines their specific needs and the support and additional provision they require.  We have a small number of students who are on assessment placements as their EHCP are being drafted.  Waltham Forest students are referred through borough Special Educational Needs Service.  Other local authorities can also apply to this service for a placement at Belmont Park and we currently have students from Hackney, Enfield, Redbridge, Lambeth and Brent.

Each of our students has three individual targets which they are expected to meet every day.  In discussion with their learning mentors they are awarded points for each of their lesson.  Positive behaviour is rewarded through certificates, phone calls home and at the end of each term a reward trip or activity for those students who have consistently reached their targets.

Students are supported in a number of other ways.  Pupils are placed in groups which take into account their special and individual needs and work is differentiated to meet these.  Our students have in class support and receive additional 1:1 literacy support.  As well as the academic support our teachers and mentors promote the students learning and well-being.  Our staff are highly skilled in developing strong relationships with our students and each and every one is known as an individual.  This enables us to intervene quickly when problems arise and to discuss and resolves issues that may occur.
